Mount Vernon has innovative, free tools for teaching the power of George Washington’s eighteenth-
century world. This interactive session highlights the resources available on their website to build lesson
plans with an emphasis on teaching about slavery.
Objective: To use the resources provided by Mount Vernon to build a guided inquiry lesson on slavery as
an example of how a teacher can use them to bring Washington’s ideas, experiences, leadership, and his
eighteenth-century world to students even from a distance.
After this session, teachers should be able to:
• Locate appropriate grade/subject resources, lesson plans, videos, and use the digital tour
available on the website.
• Build a lesson on a topic tough to teach: slavery.
